Please do not be upset with me about this. I grew up with original Trek and TNG so while I loved the performances of everyone in this film there were quite a few issues with the film as a whole.

I’m not old enough tos ay I grew up with TOS (no offense haha) but my mum first showed it to me when I was 10 and it’s been my first nerdy love. So I’m totally with you on this.

Gonna put this under a ‘read more’ since it’s gonna be massively spoilery (and also massively long, so read at your own risk) Wow this really did get long.

Okay so first off I will say that I loved loved loved loved LOVED the new movie a lot, I was worried I’d be disappointed but I so wasn’t. So there’s that. Now, for the details:

- Let’s deal with the elephant in the room first: Khan. Hoo boy that was just…a bad move on the part of the casting people. I mean really. Just…really bad. I’m not saying Benedict didn’t completely do really really well wih what he had, but…Khan Noonien Singh, does not exactly compute to ‘super white British guy’. It doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of the movie but it does make me uncomfortable in many ways.

Having said that, I was kinda both glad and also disappointed that as a bad guy he really wasn’t as big of a baddie as the original Khan was. I mean with Khan Prime (why not) you had this absolute knowledge that not only was he able to fucking murder you with his little finger, but he was SMART too. He had culture, and class. He wasn’t just some barbarian rogue. With this Khan I didn’t really feel as much of an intellectual superiority. He was smart, yes, clever, but not…not superhumanly clever. To be honest I was kinda mostly not that invested in that aspect of the movie, despite the fact that he’s supposed to be the main baddie. But in a way that’s good ‘cause you don’t feel like this is a threat to Montalban’s original portrayal, which was flawless.

- Plot I’m not super thrilled that they seem to just be rehashing the original stories with slight differences, ‘cause I mean I’d really like to see something new. I want to see them dealing with a bad guy I haven’t already seen - they did that in the first movie which was awesome, why go back to a character that’s already perfect and doesn’t need re-doing? Or like, see them dealing with the Borg (which they never did in the original series). You can have a new plot and still throw in references to the original stories forever. Having said that, the movie gave you enough suspense and excitement without getting cheesy or dragging at any point, so it’s still a great movie.

- Characters. Oooh everybody is just being so true to characters and it’s making me all nostalgic and happy. Spock is so SPOCK and McCoy is so MCCOY and Scotty is so SCOTTY. and their interactions! Mraaah I just get all of the feelings everywhere when I think of my Space Bros. I have to give special props to Karl Urban ‘cause I’ve felt from the start that he just has the perfect McCoy down (without coming across as a caricature),and I love it.

And there was one specific interaction between Spock and Kirk, “I”d be happy to join you.” “Happy, Spock, you?” “I was merely using your vernacular” that was just…so perfectly Shatner and Nimoy. aaaah.

-Things That Made Me Laugh - Basically everytime Scotty was talking. Also geesus did you see what he was wearing in the nightclub?? I mean did the 70s have a resurgence in the 2300s? And him running all the way to the end of the hanger, for some reason, hilarious. Simon Pegg is brilliant.

- McCoy flirting with Carol Marcus. “So what can these magic hands do for you?” and then Kirk’s face in reaction. Oh McCoy I love you.

- Chekov’s face after “Put on a red shirt”. (IT’S OKAY HE DIDN’T DIE (you guys have no idea how much I was worried about that))

Things that Made me Cringe - COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY UNDERWEAR SHOT. Like for serious that was the literal definition of gratuitous and pointless and omg this is 2013 and we’ve still got Kirk gawking at a half-naked girl as a joke COME ON PEOPLE. He is not a 14 year old boy.

- A lot of really heavy parallels to Wrath of Khan. Which is both bad and good. I just found that that part with the radiation (you know what part I mean) was basically a complete re-do of Wrath of Khan, with the positions swapped, and lacked at least some of the emotional gravitas ‘cause I mean come on, we all know that they werne’t going to kill off Captain Kirk. At least after Wrath of Khan, Spock actually stayed dead so like…that’s heartbreaking. This is sorta less so, especially when compared.

- Another problem with this is they have this big dramatic “I am KHAN” and like unless you’re an original series fan (which lets face it a lot o the people in the theater probably aren’t) you’re not going to have any idea what that means. And they didn’t really set him up as nearly as an impressive of a villain as the original Khan was, in my opinion.

- The fact that the female characters were basically useless. Uhura had a couple bad-ass moments, but not enough, and I mean…Marcus, what was she even there for? I want strong female characters dammit!

And finally: Things That Made Me Cry

- The radiation scene - oh god guys. As much as I knew that obviously Kirk wasn’t going to be dead dead, the emotions that both Pine and Quinto were showing was just deadly to y emotions. “Because you are my friend” and that one tear down Spock’s cheek aglkasdfj;lasdjf *dead* My bros. My forever bros. I love you.

- The death of Pine - I really love Bruce Greenwood and I really liked having Pine in the new series, and him dying was actually really sad.

- Scotty resigning. Pegg’s face when Kirk actually accepts his resignation, followed by me thinking this actually meant no Scotty for the rest of the movie, made this heartbreaking for me.
